Problem with Linking table and end of line character

I have a problem linking a table with an excel spreadsheet. The field in the spreadsheet is General format and contains several lines of text. When I link to the spreadsheet and look at the data in Access, wherever there is a new line in Excel there is a square box character.

For instance, in Excel it says...

This is line 1

This is line 2

When I look at the field in Access it says...
"This is line 1[]This is line 2[]"

Any ideas?
