problem with lightsabers

i was following a tutorial on how to make lightsabers (

, when i got stuck on the second step:

apply the lightning effect ...

well, they were using 4.0, and i'm using 5.0, so could someone tell me what effect i'm looking for

actually, i do have a problem. I want to do the lightsaber thing on a video. but when i set the start and end points (on a pencil that i'm waving around) i play it, and it remains in the same spot. please help

Everybody was waiting to see if you were going to answer this yourself... The most obvious thing I would ask is (and many apologies if you're not a novice) did you remember to activate the keyframes for the position controls of the lightning effect? This would explain why it wasn't following your saber-pencil.
