Complex issues here.

Dell XPST450
Windows 98 SE
450MHz
192 MB ram
Pentium III
I have a Phoenix Bios 4.0 release 6
ATA PCI/133 card

Ok, here goes. I bought a 60GB Maxtor HDD. My computers bios is from 1999, so I didn't think the bios wold recognise it, so I bought an ATA/133 controller card.

I hooked it up to the PCI expansion slot, installed the hard drive fine, but I can not format the drive. The computer recognises it as drive Z: which is strange, because when I go to FDISK the drive isn't there, because its not formatted?

I don't even know where to begin, first off I'mm not sure if the jumpers are correct: the new 60GB HDD is hooked up to one slot on the ATA/133 card, and the old 10GB one is hooked up to the other slot on the ATA card. Is this even right...would it make both of the hard drives "master" on being primary master and the other being secondary master?

Oh, god please help!

Would the jumpers have to be set to "master" for both drives, or what?!

if the old hard drive is reconnized, why can't I format or use the new one, and why does the BIOS setup tell me there is no devices connected to the Primary controller? Is this normal.

What are my options...should I flash the bios even though I have a ATA/133 controller card? I don't want to ruin the mother board, but mayby I HAVE to update the bios?

Or should I disconnect the new 60GB hard drive and hook it up to the IDE primary master, instead of the ATA/133 PCI controller card.

When I try to format it using MAXBlast that came with the hard drive, I get an Causeway Error...what is that?

Here is my exact bios version:

PhoenixBios 4.0 Realese 6.0 licensed to Intel
Bios date: 4/22/99!
Bios ID: 4S4EB2X0.10A.0017.PO5.9904221402
CHIPSET: INTEL 440BX/ZX REV. 3
SUPERIO(whatever that is): SMC 70X or 80X rev. 0 found at port 370h

But the most important question is do I have to flash my bios even though I have a fast ATA/133 card in orfer to recognize the 60GB maxtor HDD
Oh, I forgot...it SEEMS as though the ATA card recognizes the two devices connected to the ATA card, but in bios setup, the Primary IDE cannell say (no devices connected) now what?

Is this a problem with my bios, or the connection. When I start the computer, I get the screen for the ATA controller card, and the creen says something about two drives found, but when I go into the setup of THIS program, as well as setup of the BIOS, the drives are not "recognised"!

That was some tale
Lets start at the beginning.
Are you sure the ATA 133 controller is compat. with your system ? Go to the ATA controller Web site and make sure it will work with your motherboard and Bios. I have had several problems with ATA 133 cont. that will not function or clash with certain MB.
Try and disable the onboard HD controller. This you can do in the BIOS and only use the ATA 133 cont. They might be having a addr. clash. Also make sure each drive is on its own channel, this will prevent any problems between the drives.

Good luck

did u disable the on board ide in bios?
shouldn't really need card to run hard drive. set hard drives in bios to auto. then use maxblast to format hard drive. make sure one hard drive is set to master and the other slave if on same cable
