I have an old avermedia TV98 pci tv tuner card that im hoping to give to a friend. They have win xp home loaded on a PC Chips P4 1.8 with onboard video.
I had left myself a note that i got from Avermedia tech support last year. I had enquired as to wether this tv tuner card would work in win xp. The note said that if the chipset is BT-878 then there are drivers for win xp.
Today I was at the avermedia website and downloaded TV98 with BT-878 driver and application. The drivers themselves install just fine via dev mgr. But i cant get the software application to install. It doesnt specifically say that it is, but that would be, i imagine, the actual program, like wintv or whatever.

When i click on setup i get this error message:

16 bit windows subsystem
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications. Choose "close: to terminate the application"

The other option is "Ignore" but wether i
choose close or ignore i get nothing at all.

I did manage to get one version of wintv installed but it wont open up. Best i can get is this error message:
WinTV initialization error! A required component (hcwTVWnd.dll) is missing.

I am starting to think that even though the folder says win xp its possibly mislabeled and its not for win xp, maybe for win 98 or NT. I also right-clicked on the setup file and used properties\compatability set it to emulate win 98 and saved it. That didnt help any.

Can anyone help me with this problem to get the software installed so i can have win tv?
Does anyone have any ideas or know another place besides the avermedia website where i can get the software application in win xp flavor?

Thanks

I hope this is in the right section. I figure its more video related than anything else? Or is there somewhere else this should go?
thanks

The file "hcwTVWnd.dll" mentioned in your post is most probably a Hauppauge Computer Works TV tuner card file. So do you suppose Avermedia doesn't actually make TV tuner cards... but instead sells Hauppauge's cards under private label? If so, and if you can find out what Hauppauge card it probably corresponds to (or is close to), you may be in luck.

Although Avermedia no longer provides drivers, I have XP drivers and application software for two very old (1995) Hauppauge WinTV-PCI cards.

thanks very much for your comments. It makes a bit more sense. You know, i was on that page, read quite a bit. Then i thought, well, this is definitely an Avermedia card, no doubt about it, and theres no doubt its the BT-878. And Avermedia has the files and programs and they are who i should be getting them from. But the problem with that thinking is they dont work. The 4 sets of drivers work, cap card, tv tuner, etc, etc, they all install fine. Its the program (tv) that wont work.
I also got a different copy from the South American site. This is a good hint, usually, when i cant find what i want on the US site, i go to the South American site. Sure enough, i found a lot more there, they keep older stuff around a lot longer. So i downloaded that and it wont work either.
Right here I got the last set of files:
It shows the exact card, the Avermedia TV98, it shows the chipset BT-878, and it has win xp. So i am to download this:
Product : TV98 (USA)(BT-878 chip) Ver. 1.01
OS : Windows XP
Driver / Application: TV982k.zip

I use dev mgr and the drivers install fine, but the program wont install, i get the same error message.

16 bit windows subsystem
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications. Choose "close: to terminate the application"

So i am going back to the site you mentioned and go ahead and download and install whats there.

Thanks very much,Frank4d. i want this to work as its a good card and my friend could get use out of it.

I should have mentioned. I did try and install the Hauppage program, wintv2000 that i have on my main computer. I got a notice when trying to install that wintv2000 couldnt find the hauppage tvtuner and so it halted the installation. Thats when i turned to Avermedia.
I forgot that little bit of important info. Thats another reason why i didnt try whats on the page you have suggested. But i have nothing to lose and i am gonna try it out. This is one time where having goback is a blessing!
Its so much better than system restore. With either goback or system restore you dont have to do a manual deletion of files in registry, you dont have to go searching in program files for leftovers, etc. But thats another story.
Thanks, will try and see what happens.

I think i kind of mislead you about the "hcwTVWnd.dll)"
That came about because i tried using the hauppage wintv program. That led you to think it was a re-brand of some sort.
Im not sure on that point but i do know it is the same chipset.

Anyway, i did as you advised and it wont work. I installed the drivers from the page you pointed out but for some reason they installed but didnt show up. So i installed the drivers i had on hand that would install.
Then i installed the wintv from the page you pointed out.
It installed but wont work.
I get this error message "wintv initialization error.hTV=0"
I am off to hauppage site to see about that error message.

Today i received this from Avermedia support:

Ticket Subject : tv tuner withBT-878 chipset
Reply:
The TV98 tuner card is a discontinued product which is no longer supported. I would recommend you to get a new TV tuner card like the UltraTV 1500 MCE that will support WinXP. Please see link below to find out more about this
product.

Of course thats what they would say, lol.

It looks to me like the WinTV people or whoever makes the WinTV software kind of controls things. Reason i say this is the drivers for winxp install with no prob but i cant get a WinTV program to work and without that i am stuck. I wonder why they would bother to make drivers for win xp for this chipset?
I must be missing something here.

Anyone?

Forgot to mention, when I tried to run the win TV program i got a number of error messages but they went by real fast and ended with this one: "wintv initialization error. hTV=0"
I did see a few others, one mentioned it couldnt find hauppage capture. I get the impression that if its not a hauppage made card then i am out of luck.

So, in the end, what good are drivers for win xp when you cant get the needed winTV software application! Damn frustrating.

Sorry if "hcwTVWnd.dll" led you down the wrong road. It does look like you are probably screwed and will have to buy a new TV tuner card. I don't think you want an Avermedia though if they only support their cards for just a few years. My Hauppauge cards are both about 10 years old and Hauppauge is still supplying drivers.

Again, though, its not the drivers. The drivers for win xp install fine.

Its the software program that wont install.
Funny thing is that i started the program in my computer and my computer accepted it. I didnt finish the install as i have a hauppage card in my own computer.
So i think it may work in my computer but it wont work in my friends, course im not really certain on that. But on my friends, win xp home, the software wont install, gives me the error message (16 bit) while it doesnt give me that error message on my computer. The only difference is i am running xp pro and he is running xp home.

Thanks, MonkeyX. I gave up on this but will likely give it a try later, thanks to this info you have submitted.
