I have a problem with the IMS after appying SP4 to Exchange 5.5 (was at SP3. The IMC could not start, so deleted it. Now the problem is the IMC can't be added at the connections of the site. error id:4087
Checked MS site, recommended to remove Network Protocols, and re-add the protocols, then the NT4 SPs. Tried many times, still can't resolve the problem.

(Actually error code is 4087, The service could not be started because the queue viewing interface could not be registered)

Hi

Did you ever resolve this problem? I am curious because I am currently seeing the probelm with Exchange 5.5, sp4 and I can't figure out how to resolve it.

What is the exact error you get in event viewer? Get the exact message and post it here (I.E - Event ID Number, message, etc). I believe there is a patch for this on MS website.

When trying to install the internet mail service, it stops on "on starting the service" Then the following error appears: While attempting to start the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, the following error was encountered: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Microsoft Windows NT ID no: 0x002041d

The following error also appears in the event viewer: Event ID 4087, Source: MsExchangeIMC, Description: The service could not be started because the queue viewing interface could not be registered.

Things I've tried per KB articles:
Removing SNMP service
Removing IIS
Re-installing Exchange & service packs
Re-installing NT service pack 6a
I verified that the service account has local admin rights
Services for Apple Talk are not installed on this server
There are no other protocols installed on this server other than TCP/IP
By the way, tcp/ip is functioning correctly
An x400 address exists for the administrator account

Not sure if this will fix your problem but you may want to peak at these articles.

Microsoft (I know the call is expensive) I'm sure has a fix for this. I've heard of strange things happening with SP4 installed relating to the IMS and they had a patch for it. Sorry can't find that patch but I know it exists.

Thanks. I applied the hot fixes, they didn't help. I had come across the other MS Knowledge Base articles yesterday and had tried them. Since the internet mail service has been removed, there isn't an Microsoft Internet Mail Service in the services menu any longer and the Administrator mailbox has an X.400 address space. I even tried a few things that I found on the Google NewsGroups. No luck. I think that it's going to come down to the NT OS being re-installed. I didn't want to go there but oh well. I have a feeling that the problem is probably related to a .dll or a registry entry somewhere. Unfortunately Microsoft's articles are not helping so I think that a re-install of the OS may do the trick.

Any chance you can call Microsoft before doing a painful reinstall of everything? They may be able to resolve your problem without you having to wipe everything and reinstall the OS.

Good luck to you!

Its a bit off-thread but be aware Microsoft are currently promoting multiple Post SP4 hotfixes to store.exe.

Zoe mentions 27978 this is store version: 5.5.2654.29
Q doc 325939 has store version 5.5.2656.60

both supposedly for IMS related issues and both only to be use as required. I was supporting a site recently where they were haveing major problems with store. Microsoft provided the hotfix for 325939 and said that this should be applied to ALL their exchange servers post SP4. It did fix their store.exe problem but this isn't reflected in a tech document anywhere.

I guess point being that there are a few post SP4 Exchange things that Microsoft aren't providing straight answers on and the only way to get the answer is to go directly to them

Thanks! I'll try those hotfixes. In regards to calling Microsoft, I try not to do that because I don't like asking my boss for permission (since it costs money). What is driving me crazy is that I have another server with the same versions on it and the IMC installs just fine on that server!!

Aaarggghhh....after much trouble, the solution was found. Luckily I did not re-image the server. We have a new e-mail domain and a new spam filtering product that also acts as our SMTP relay to the outside world. I was configuring an Exchange server for the new domain and I was told which IP address to point the internet mail connector to forward mail to. It turns out this IP address was incorrect. I also tried configuring the IMC to forward using DNS and to forward to other known SMTP relay servers but it wouldn't work because the SMTP relay servers and DNS are in a different domain. Finally I was told that I should configure the IMC to point to the IP Address of a SQL server that works in conjuntion with our SMTP relay server. Bingo, the IMC installed and it is working just fine....If I had only been given the correct IP address in the first place I could have saved myself hours of time...oh well, it was a learning experience.
