I have installed a new hard drive in my laptop which has a size of 160 GB. I have realized that the size in Windows is showing only 75 GB and the drive was not partioned during the installation.
Is it possible without reinstalling the Windows and the rest of the programs to bring back the actual size of 160 GB? There is no problem with the drive it works fine it just doesn't show me the right size. I am 100% sure when I purchased it, that it was a 160 GB hard drive and can see it on its label.

Don't know what happened, but it's kind of strange if it wasn't user error. Go into your BIOS and VERIFY that your computer thinks the drive is 160GB. If not, update the BIOS the very first thing.

If the drive is NOT NTFS, convert it now.
Then try this program (see below). Be CAREFUL. Other third party pieces of software are more user friendly, but most of them are not free.

Look in Disk Management to see what your OS is reporting as far as total drive size, not just partitioned size. Start, Run..., diskmgmt.msc

Could be a 160 GB Drive with one bad platter...

1. Disc management shows 75 GB.
2. Laptop is a Fujitsu Siemens, and the hard drive is Seagate.
3. Its been a while since I replaced this with old drive, and as I have been using the company's laptop so I havent givet much care.
4. The disc is already convertet to NTFS.
5. Chkdsk also gives a 75 GB size!

are you sure that you are using a 160gb drive...

what does the BIOS have to say about the size of the hdd?

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

I can not see any info about the disc in BIOS, only the six of the RAM.

It should be in there somewhere. Check to see if there are multiple pages of the BIOS that you haven't "flipped through". Some Dell's require ALT-P to cycle through the screens.

What does this mean????? "only the six of the RAM

six of the RAM" ... sorry mistype! I mean that there is only info about the RAM size in the BIOS.
My laptop is a Fujitsu/Siemens, and it only shows a simple and an advance BIOS setup pages. In these two I can not see any info regarding the HD size.

On the advanced page, there is nothing that you can expand under a category to view more information or system settings? That would be odd if there were no ability to set anything.

mach04,

It sounds like you've not been using the laptop much, and you changed the hard drive out a while back. How far back was it? Is it not possible you just forgot that you actually put in an 80GB drive?

Since you put it in, you know how to get it out. Turn the laptop off, pull out the hard drive, look at it, and make SURE it is a 160GB drive, not 80GB.

While it's out, take down the specifics of it - any model #, etc, so possibly we can look for any known issues.

Also, if worse comes to worse, just wipe it, and send it in to Seagate for replacement. Most of their drives, at least, have a 5 year warranty, so surely you're within that time frame.
