Problem with email attachments and .dat extension

I am running Outlook 2003 and some of my received e-mail attachments have a .dat file extension for some unexplicable reason.
Addtionally, it appears anything that I attach and send turns out as a .dat file.

I hacve seen some info on how to handle files called winmail.dat but the files I have appear as "filename" & .dat

Any ideas?

Change your sending format to text or HTML instead of RTF.
