Problem with Emacs and accented characters

Hi --

I'm cut-and-pasting text from a Spanish document into
Emacs. (I don't speak Spanish.) Emacs is changing the
accented characters in the Spanish text into other
characters. For example, año becomes "aqo", and
quién becomes "quiin". telefónico becomes "telefinico".

I encountered this once before, but it was long ago
and I no longer remember how to fix this. I greatly
appreciate any help. Thanks.
