I have a remote user that dials in to the Exchange 5.5 Server. I have it set up to use offline. When he opens Outlook, and then click on Send/Receive, it will dial the connection. After retrieving and sending messages, it will automatically disconnect. Is there a way to keep it connected?

If you go to the Tools menu in Outlook and select Options and click on the Mail Delivery tab, is the hang up when finished sending/receiving option ticked? DEC

Thanks, I will check that out. If that is the case, I'm going to feel stupid for overlooking that.

There is no option for hang up when finished sending/receiving in Outlook 2000. Any other suggestions?

You don't have the hang up when finished option because you have probably installed OL2000 as Corporate or Workgroup (CW). Read the articles listed below for more details.

In the last article it says:

The mail account option, "Check for new messages every <n> minutes," is designed to help you cut down on Internet connection charges. After each scheduled connection completes its sending and receiving process, Outlook terminates the connection.

Outlook honors the "Hang up when finished sending, receiving, or updating" dialing setting when you initiate the connection manually from within Outlook by clicking the Tools menu and then clicking Send and Receive.

However, if you change to IMO you may not be able to access an Exchange server (not sure about this).

Before changing from CW to IMO type outlook, you should try to send/recieve manual rather than automatically to see if the connection stays up after being established. Also try manual send/recieve with connection previously established using DUN.

Outlook2002(XP) does not have these limitaions, you can choose the type of email account when you create an account and the don't hang up options works as you would expect.

The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.

Thank you for your response. It will stay connected if I connect before opening Outlook but I think I will probably upgrade to Outlook 2002. Thanks again!
