One of my clients has this problem: XP machine can access to the internet in
the office
LAN. When using dialup at home, it's unable to access the internet with the
browser or email program. Ping ip gets reply and ping web name may or may
not work. The routing table and ipconfig /all look OK.

1. Ping any web sites like yahoo.com will show some characters like []and
O-:(see below)

Pinging yahoo.com [] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=207ms TTL=243

Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=230ms TTL=243

Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=215ms TTL=243

Reply from 66.218.71.198: bytes=32 time=252ms TTL=243

Ping statistics for O-:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 207ms, Maximum = 252ms, Average = 226ms.

2. tracert shows as below
c:\>tracert yahoo.com

Tracing route to yahoo.com []
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 169 ms 152 ms 438 ms G3-0.Q-GSR1.BOS.verizon-gni.net No
resources.

3. nslookup can't find server name:
c:\>nslookup yahoo.com
*** Can't find server name for address 151.198.0.38: No response from server
*** Can't find server name for address 199.45.37.38: No response from server
*** Can't find server name for address 151.203.0.84: No response from server
*** Can't find server name for address 151.203.0.85: No response from server
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 151.198.0.38

*** UnKnown can't find yahoo.com: No response from server.

4. Trying different DNS like 4.2.2.1 gets the same problem.

5. Also, after using dialup, the xp can't access the internet in the LAN any
more even after rebooting. The only way to fix this problem and use LAN to
access the Internet is to do system
restore.

Have run winsockfix and spybot but didn't fix the problem. Any ideas?

If your company uses an external DNS server, you need to put that server's IP in the client's dial-up properties. But if you don'have any External DNS server, then you either have to leave it blank if the clients access by VPN or place in the IP of the DNS server being used by the client's ISP if they dial in through another ISP.

Thank you for help. Have tried both, leaving DNS blank and adding external DNS. get the same problem. any other suggestions?

Have you tried putting the dns server in a hosts file just for jollies and see what happens? Make dns automatic if you try it. Good luck.

we did try to assign different DNS, but could make it work. So it did work?

Blin2000:

I am seeing exactly the same thing.

I don't have a good restore point and XP install/repair didn't fix it.

Did you find any way to solve the problem? (other than do a restore)

Fixed the problem. here is resoltions quoted form Can ping public IPs but not web sites

Symptoms: 1. You can ping any public IPs but not web sites. 2. The routing table and ipconfig look OK but you can't browse any web sites.

Resolutions: 1. Check the DNS, for example using nslookup to troubleshooting.
2. To test, disable any firewall. If it works after disabling firewall, re-configure the firewall and make sure the firewall doesn't black port 43..
3. Check the status of winsock.dll, wsock32.dll or download winsockfix to fix the problem
4. Also try to disable DNS client service if you don't have domain network or use ipconifg /flushdns to purge the DNS resolver cache.
5. Apply SP.
6. Try to logon another user.
7. Check Event Viewer for any errors
8. Remove and re-install NIC with latest drive.
9. Assign static IP, Gateway and DNS manually.
