I recently created a diferential backup job. This run successfully first time and the media was appended to and placed in the correct media set. The job is now set to run again but an error of : No appendable media could be mounted, error- mount failed. Physical volume Library Media not Found.
I have looked on the Veritas site and under their tech notes for this error they suggest altering the job settings to overwrite media or Append to media, overwrite if no appendable media is available. I have selected the second option but the job comes up with a message asking me to overwrite the allocated media.
This obviously I do not want to do as the tape contains data. I know the tape is not full.
Is there another way to solve this error or do I have to create a 2nd tape.

I hope you get a good reply as I am having the same problem. I've set up several servers like this w/ backup exec - schedule a "normal" backup for part of the server, then schedule a differential backup for all the server to run later. Never had a problem. Did the same on this server and it worked first 2 days, but now the normal backup runs but I can't do an append differential. Same prob whether scheduled or run manually. Put in a new tape and still would not run - always get "no appendable media could be mounted" even with brand new tape. Append period is infinite. I was able to run a differential backup on the new tape by changing job to "overwrite". Need help please.

Forgot to include the log file says:

No appendable media could be mounted.
Error - Mount failed.

The problem is that your tape is full and it needs another tape. Why is your tape full? Well, you have it set to append and never overwrite, so it's kept appending until it got full and now it can't overwrite old data. Put a second tape into the media set or allow the job to overwrite the old data. BTW-if you look at the error box you are getting, you should see a small checkbox that says something like "Do not display this window". Check that box. The BIG issue here is that BE is waiting for you to tell it what you want to do....overwrite the available tape, give it another tape to use, or cancel the job. If you check the box, then BE will AUTOMATICALLY do what's necessary (Within the parameters you have set).
