Problem with creating a registration page in FP2000

After creating a website with FP extensions installed, and created a registration page in the root web, with permission set on the subweb for registered users only, but when I tested it IE displayed this error:-
'Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions' Smart HTML interpreter on this non-HTML page: "

http://name/folder/registration.htm"'

I even renamed the extension to html but I still get the same error. Everything else works, but the registration page, what could be the problem?

That error usually occurs when you mix ASP on a FrontPage form page. Have you looked in the Microsoft Knowledge base for more info on that particular error?
