I'm not sure how to explain this, but I will try. A friend of mine is having trouble accessing the internet with her PC (a old HP model running XP Home). This has been going on for a week or more. Now this is the thing: she gets her internet by sharing a cable modem connection using a D-Link router with another person. The person's internet is fine. But my friend's connection can't even see the router if you ping it from her PC. We installed a new NIC in her PC (and disabled her onboard LAN, which she was using before), but still the same problem.

In her network settings, she's has it configured for DHCP... which worked for her until recently. In the Control Panel under Network the icon for her network connection has warning symbol (that yellow triangle with the exclamation mark) and a small lock symbol (I've never seen that before). When I use the Troubleshoot button for the connection it says that it is trying to renew IP address. I don't understand why this is. Another guy connected his laptop to her Ethernet cable and accessed just fine, so it's not the wire.

I'm stumped with this. Does anyone have a suggestion what I should look for next? Thanks.

I would recommend removing and reinstalling the network card-TCP/IP layer and see if that resolves the problem.

Enkrypted
A+
