I went yesterday with a customer which has 2 CP PIV set as split due to health issues (cpu0 has 24 and cpu1 has 22) we tried to reestablish the system to redundant and we found that core1 wasnt responding anymore, I set the system to split again.

I found out the Simpletech 1 GB CF that acts as Hard Drive is out, there is nothing on it, but I cant access it either from my PC (I tested my reader with the 64 MB CF used for backups and it worked just fine)

So I need to replace it, the question here is:

Can I use any size CF formatted down to 1 GB (because here in Mexico I can only find 4GB and 8 GB Kingston CF) or it HAS to be 1 GB CF Sandisk memory?

I checked the Nortel KB and found about CF from 2006 - 2007 acting weird, but I saw this KB article did not apply to my case, the CF is fried, but the CP PIV works just fine.

Thanks for your help

Here are the nortel KB pages (you will need a nortel ID to see them):

This one talks about a misconfigured flash

And this KB Article talks about the cf acting funky 2007007622.2

you will not see the partitions on the Compact flash from a CPPIV system.

the INDUSTRIAL GRADE compact flash that is part of the CPPIV FMD is better than what you buy at a store, more writes etc... so i would not recommend attempting to do that.

What made you come to the decision that the CF card was dead?

There were some early CF cards from NORTEL that had an issue, those are no longer used, and there was a process in place to have them replaced for customers that experienced the problem.

I have in the past deleted the partitions via LINUX part manager and was able to reuse a CF card, or you can try the NORTEL util to re-partition it but you would need to boot off the install RMD on the CpPIV.

What release of software do you have on your switch? If you have Succession 6.0 then welcome to the club. There are known issues with this setup. Serious issues at that. You will lose partitions on the RMD that will cause the EDD's to fail, and subsequently the sync between the cores fails and then goes into split mode and eventually in to single mode.

There is currently no fix for this issue. GNTS/ETAS has a patch they are testing right now that will allow them to diagnose the problem. Right now they do not even know why this is happening.

The current fix is to reload the software on each core. The problem with this is that you are stuck with your last backup. You will have to reprogram the phones that have been programmed since the last backup.

If I am correct this does go back to Succession 5.0 but they have patches in 5.0 and 5.5 but 6.0 is still a mystery. I am working with GNTS on this issue and will keep you updated.

To date there are four patches that need to be installed. These patches will unmount and mount the RMD when it is removed, as they have stated that if you just pull the RMD out and place a new one in will cause data corruption in Succession 6.0.

The current published work around is to keep upgrading the systems and they will figure out what the problem is.

Hope this helps.

Ok:

@triton101 Because the CF shorted my CF reader everytime I wanted to read it, I tried with the other CF they use for backup and there was no problem at all, thats how I came to the conclusion the CF is fried (and the customer told me that the CPU1 stopped working after an electrical discharge)

@janaya its a 4.50W release, the CPU0 is working OK and its on split mode right now.

What I want to know is can I use another kind of CF in order to get it to work? if so, which one?

The other question: I bought a PNY 2GB compact flash, can I use this one in order to reinstall the CP PIV software, I have sandisk cards, but they are 128MB (the image weights uncompressed 198 MB)

Thanks for your help and input

If you have an Option 61c to 81c etc using CF Slots (which most should be on) etc, then the faceplate CF card can only be a 512 Meg card. Anything larger won't work.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

I think he is talking about FMD not the RMD drive flash.

I would still stay away from a NONE approved brand. The system writes to both simultaneously, so who knows what sort of effect that will cause.... my 2 cents....

also

If it's fried you might have a prob with the flash slot also/maybe....

but here is what NORTEL suggested in the past

SanDisk 1Gig FMD or a Nortel NTE90058E6 1 Gig compact flash (CF)

Well, I received a call today I will be receiving on monday 2 1Gb CF, I hope I can use one to do the software install, else im going to be SOL :(

ok 4.5, there was a bulletin that came out about a batch of bad compact flash cards. I don't have it with me but I have it at work. I will post the bulletin on Monday.

Had this issue on an old 4.50 machine aswell, had to swap the FMD CF card on CPU 1. Tried using a 2GB sandisk that i had in my pc bag but that didnt work to good. I recomend not trying anything other then the standard flashcard supplied by nortel.

Best Regards.

Just to close this:

The RMD is unreplaceable, it MUST be a 512 MB Sandisk CF :( fortunately the customer FINALLY remembered he had that thing among the stuff the original installer left him.

The Reinstall went smooth afterwards.

Memories formatted down to 512 or 256 for some reason simply wont work, even having the same Filesystem

Cheers
