Hi, I have a user who is trying to connect to our os/400 server using the 5250 emulation client (client access for windows). Whenever she tries to make a connection, she gets the error "hostname not found or not available". I can ping the server from her machine with no problem. I can also go to a cmd prompt (this is WinXP Pro) and create a telnet session to the server and log in fine. There are no software firewalls or anything else running on her machine, and other users can connect to the same server (using the same client software) as well.

any ideas anybody? thanks!

Do you ping the DNS name or go to the IP address. I am running XP Pro, and I have found that there are times, when the DNS name does not work, and I had to use the IP address. So I changed to always use the IP address.

I can ping both the name and the IP address. I've checked our DNS entries and there's only one entry for that IP address for our subnet, so there's no confusion there.

I have tried creating a session using both the server name AND the ip address, and I still get the same error "hostname not found or not available"

I tried uninstalling the client this morning, rebooting, then reinstalling the client, and still the same error.

I'm pulling my hair out over this one! Thanks for any ideas or suggestions!

try adding a lmhost entry to see if that fixes your problem,

nope, sorry - already tried that too. no luck - same error. the sysadmin for the 400 keeps saying it's a tcp/ip problem (which I think is a load of crap)

we're going to try a different emulator to see if we can narrow the problem down a bit more.

thanks for all the great tips, I really appreciate it.

one more idea,,, is the AS400 defined in the Lan system. We have windows 2000 server, and we have a dns entry for the As400. Just kind of grasping at straws..
