Problem with browser and page loads

I am having a weird problem. I bring up my browser, and go to the pages I need, but after 3 or 4 steps, it just won't load any new pages or links. The icon does not 'spin' and the links will not respond. If I right-click and indicate a new window, I will get a blank window with full URL address, but it I press the refresh button, the window remains blank and the URL in the address bar disappears.

This happens with Netscape 7.2, IE 6 and Firefox. I check my usage and find 63% resources are free (256M RAM). I have run Search & Destroy as well as Ad-Aware but there is no spy-ware on my machine. I also have Norton Antivirus, but no firewalls except VPN which is activated when I sign into work. I am accessing the internet via cable. The problem has grown from hardly noticeable to very noticeable.

Any ideas what I need to check next?

Time to do some checking for spyware. There are a number of helpful FAQ's around this site that should help.

FAQ608-4650 Before Posting a Hijack log file - Best Practices
FAQ608-3482 How to beat your advertising popups & other browser nasties
FAQ760-4866 Beginners General Cleanup
FAQ779-5240 What are Good Virus/Spyware?Update/Firewall Practices?

Now I have done several of the things in the FAQ already, including the HiJackThis log cleanup and CWShredder (but there are others things in the FAQ I never seen before and will try). I am wondering (out loud) if Search & Destroy's immunization function is causing this. Any thoughts?

It seems unlikely, but certainly is concieveable. Any software (usually malware) that interacts with the browser could cause problems. Are you saying that your HiJackThis log was clean?

See for yourself...
