I have a problem under exchange 5.5 and outlook express. When email with an attachment is sent out through our company’s exchange server the email goes through with not errors, but if a user tries to open that same message using outlook express as the email client the user can not see the attachment. The message body shows up fine, but no attachment (no errors). This applies to email sent to both internal (within the same exchange site) and external recipients. Outlook 2000 and 2002 work fine. Any Ideas on what could be the problem? I have tried changing the encoding and protocol settings under exchange but no luck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a Content Scanner? We use F-Secure anti-virus for microsoft exchange and when the content scanner is down this is exactly what it does. The attachment sits there and waits for F-Secure to scan it so the user never sees it...

No we do not use F-secure, but we do use Symantec's norton antivus for exchange. My point is that if a users uses outlook to view the message he/she can see and save the attachment with no problems. On the other hand outlook express users can not see any attachments period. A lot of the people that we do buiseness with are still using outlook express and are not able to see the attachments that our users send them.

The only other thing I could think of would be that outlook express is blocking the attachment. But I believe when it does that there is a message box that says it blocked a potentially dangerous attachment.

We do not get any errors of any kind, the attachment is simply not there. This only happens when email is sent or received through our exchange server, and the client if outlook express.

Hello, we are having the exact same problem. Is there not a solution to this most puzzling problem? Thanks.

I hate to dig up such a old post but does anyone have a solution to this issue... We are having a similar problem with Outlook Express Attachments missing or hidden and on other systems it is working without trouble.

Thanks,
Vince

the problem with us was with a specific user account having microsoft rich text format enabled for pop email access. since that is what they were using with outlook express the attachments were disappearing. but with outlook and imap access it was fine. so check your global settings first for the protocol you are having the problem with then specific user account settings if you notice this is only happening with a certain user.

Vince0000,

In OE (I'm assuming 6.0) go Tools | Options. Click on the Security tab and then uncheck the box which states: Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.

Cheers.

We are having this same problem with Exchange 5.5 and Outlook Express 6.0 when using the IMAP protocol. Any email with an attachment generated from our internal server will not display the attachment in Outlook Express. If we connect using POP3, however, the same attachment can be seen. Anything sent into our site from outside can be seen in both the IMAP and the POP3 connection. We have unchecked the "Do Not Allow ..." box and changed the security zone to Internet vs. Restricted (changing this last one is what suddenly began allowing attachments from outside). We are also using MacAfee Virus Defense Suite. We've tried stopping the service but it had no impact. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

We did some addtional research on MS Knowledge Base and found the solution to this problem in Article ID #266286. The problem can occur with the IMAP protocol if the setup in Exchange is marked "Use Microsoft Exchange rich-text format. To resolve the issue open the properties of the IMAP4 protocol object, click the Message Format tab, and uncheck "Use Microsoft Exchange rich-text Format". Once the change has been made delete the account from Outlook Express and set it up again. Attachments will now appear correctly when the message is downloaded.

Hope this is of benefit.

Dan
