I recently inherited an HP Laserjet 3100 printer/fax machine with a problem printing out documents. The problem started a couple of weeks ago with the documnets having real bold and smeared print then fading until it was no longer visible. I replaced the cartridge three times with the same result. I also did some cleaning on the inside of the machine, but it still happens. Is there something I am missing?

What happens when copying or faxing ? Or is it only when printing text ? I`d say the fuser is probably either damaged or it needs some cleaning. Try making 5-10 pages in full black color from a drawing application ex. to see if the problem is solved. If the problem persists, the fuser should be replaced at a reseller or repaircenter.

Thanks for your response. Basically, what happens is whenever a fax comes through or a document is printed, the document prints but everything at the top of the page is really bold and smudgy. The lighter print is barely readable because it is so light. This has just started happening out of the blue. I played with all the settings in the printer's ink properties, but it still gives me trouble. I was trying to avoid sending this in somewhere for fear of it costing me a lot in labor. I will gove your suggestion a shot. Is a fuser easy to install and how much does it cost? Thanks.

A fuser is unfortunatly seldom cheap to get hold of. :-( Also it is not exactly easy to change, as you have to disassemble the printer pretty much to get down to the fuser part. If you do wanna go for the DO - IT - YOURSELF, and feel comfortable with disassembling your printer in several parts, I might be able to send you a technical overview (pics and parts list) of that operation per mail if interested.

HpWizzard,
I would love a copy of your technical overview. Could I get your email address so I can send you my mailing info?

Jiminks,
Thanks for the link. I believe it will prove itself useful.

Unfortunatly I can`t give you my company mail add at HP, but you could write to this mail add: coffeeman@in-box.net
