Hi,

I was hoping you could help me with a problem regarding 128k frame relay. I know very little about frame relay. I have a few users who are at a remote location running from a 128kb frame relay port. The performance is really slow. It might take up to 20 mins to save a file. Networking insists that the circuits are not overloaded. I've been asked to look at the problem from the client side. All seven computers are having the same problem. It's hard for me to believe it's a client issue but I don't know enough about networking and frame relay to insist that it's not a client issue. Do you have any suggestions? Is there anything that can be done on the client side that would increase performance? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You need access to the port data from the router. A crude way is use ping and traceroute to build some time tables. Anything over 20mS response time is suspect. Not really bad per say but suspect enough to dig further. The telco should be able to provide data on utilization from their side which is generally reliable. Something else to remember is many times even though you have a 128K link at one end, the far end is several links coming together at one port so you have to look at the aggregate load at the port, not just one end. Again, the telco should be able to provide this info. Also check the LAN side to make sure there is not a bottleneck between the clients and the router.

Good Call Mike. As a telco employee I do know that ANS
( Advance Network Services ) can monitor the span and give
you a report utilization. I have seen this problem before on a 128 cir that did not have any burst rate. The resolution to that was to move up to a 256 or a 512 circuit.
Good luck with this issue !!! J.Fisher CCNA
