Hello,

i have seen whenever we get Longlink created while untarring a tar file it means few file-names are not complete, since tar ia having limitation over the filename.

how can we avoid this? Using GTAR a a full proof alternative?
and also how can we get the list of all files whose names are changed.

thanks,
namrata

Do you get the same error when you list the contents of the tar file using tar t?

What version of tar and on what operating system?

Annihilannic.

Hello,

OS - faced this on both HP-UX and SUN-OS
tar version - any NON GNU version of tar

and @Longlinks are there in the listing of the files - so this means wherever we have @Longlinks we have a problem.

Just use [tt]gtar[/tt] on the HP-US and Sun-OS systems. I've only had this problem when tarring something on Linus and then untarring on anything else. [tt]gtar[/tt] solves it.
