Problem w/NET USE on Standalone WS

I'm attempting to run NET USE on a single workstation under W2K Pro in order to redirect the print to a USB printer. (The system has no parallel port.) When I execute the command I get the message "The Network Connection Could Not Be Found". This seems to be saying that I cannot use the NET USE command because I'm not connected to a network. I've not encountered this problem on other versions of Windows which work fine under the above scenario.

Does anyone have a workaround for this problem? My thoughts are I need to fool the Workstation into thinking it's on a network, but I'm not sure how to do this. Anyway someone may have a better idea. Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I think the registry modification will solve the problem.

Well I definately spoke too early on this one. When I got back in the office and actually tried the registry mod (the documentation describes the problem exactly) - nothing. I still get "The Network Connection Could Not Be Found" msg ... I'm back to the beginning. If anyone has experience with this problem, I sure would love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Keith

when typing "net use" at a DOS prompt, do you still get the error?

Thanks for the response. Yes, when I type "net use" at the command prompt I get the same error. It goes like this:

*************************
C:>NET USE LPT1 /DELETE
The Network Connection Could Not Be Found

C:>NET USE LPT1 \\BMM-BEACH\DOT
System error 67 has occurred.

The network name cannot be found.

C:\>
*************************
Where BMM-BEACH is the name of the Workstation and DOT is the name of the printer. System error 67 means that the network connection wasn't found.

HTH,

Keith

Hi, Keith

What you are trying to do should work, providing

- you have defined a network with file and printer sharing enabled
- you have shared the printer called DOT on the "network"

This is the method I usually use to connect to USB printers, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. Maybe you don't have a nic? I have only done it on machines with a network adapter, though it wasn't necessarily connected to a lan.
