Problem using summary fields

Hi,

I'm using FileMaker Pro 4.0. I would like to create a report with summary fields displaying totals and averages for a collection of records. The problem is that when I go to define a summary field the summary type is not among the choices offered! I'm using a french version of FileMaker. The choices offered are (I've translated to english the type names):

Text Multimedia
Number Calculated
Date Statistic
Hour Global

I assume that some sort of condition must be met before the summary type is made available. Could anyone give me a few pointers on this problem.

This is just a wild guess. Look at 'Statistic'.
