hello,
i'm adding a disk to my Raid 5 and i have to umount the 2 file systems in my datavg.

i rebooted the rs6000 AIX 4.3 server and it sees the new drive fine.

1st thing after reboot i type:
#umount /rims

this give me an error that says the following:
umount: 0506-349 Cannot unmount /dev/rims: The requested resource is busy.

i issue the same command thru SMIT and get the same error.

i did this same procedure a few months ago and didn't get this error.
nobody but me was on the system and i was logged in at the server under root.

i'm trying it again tonight.
any sugestions on what to do would be appriciated.
tia.

Hi,

Could you have any process started by rc* accessing this filesystem ? Check with "fuser"

start by doing fuser on the filesystem and logical volume. Hopefully that will tell you what processes are using it and you can kill them

If that doesnt work, then stop them automounting by doing a chfs -Ano /filesystem and the rebooting

Dave

thank you both for the tips.
i won't be able to try it for about an hour though.

i've done a little more research.
does the umount command have to be run in any specific directory?
i ran it from root #/
(i'm very green at this btw)

You can run it from anywhere ( other than from within the directory structure that you wish to unmount ).

One other thing to look for if you cannot see any processes using it. Is there a file system mounted within it

e.g. trying to umount a filesystem called /local when there is a filesystem called /local/mountpt mounted. This prob can be dealt with by doing /umount /local/mountpt and then umount /local
