Hi all
I intend to clone an intellistation P265.
both station are absolutely identic concerning hardware.
source station is in AIX5.3 and contains approximately 12 Gb
I built a mksysb tape using smit with no error
To restore the tape on the target station, I boot on a AIX cd and choose "restore from a mksysb"

restoration is very long but I finally get message over mounting /. (83% done)
after a few minutes, I get hundreds of messages :
update_status[119] 4*** killed overmounting /.
does anyone have a clue ?
thanks.

You may have the level of os between the 2.
***Boot from the mksysb tape itself and it will restore everything for you.

the boot image is more than 12 Mb big.
therefore, I can't boot directly on the tape . I have to boot on a CD and the restore from mksysb.
That's how I'm used to do.
the restoration of data is complete. (100 %) the problem occurs after.

You'll need to get a CD at the exact same oslevel (same ML or TL) as the base system where you built the mksysb.

See DukeSSD's answer in this thread: thread52-1328608 on how to order the CD set.

If you need to register on the aboue site you should know your customer number and the machine type and serial number. This will allow the site to verify you have a licence for AIX.

If the above gives you problems, contact your IBM Business Partner or IBM Sales Man / Account Manager and ask for a Media Refresh at the exact AIX level and ML / TL of your
mksysb.

"both station are absolutely identic concerning hardware."
What about firmware?

Firmware site:

The 9112-265 needs at least level CLT04194 to support AIX 5.3.

Was the restore machine running 5.3 before the restore attempt?

Oh, and take your mksysb with the -p if your tape drive supports compression. The -p dissables software compression.
Using both hardware (tape drive) and software compression causes restore problems.

Does the system you took the mksysb on have a mirrored rootvg?

Thank you all for your help.
even after un update_all on ML5, I still have oslevel -r = 5.3 ML01
I tried to boot on 2 different CDs : 5.3 without ML and 5.3ML4 with same results.

I upgarded firmware of target machine to latest but it didn't solve.

I have only 1 disk per machine -> no mirroring
I don't think it is a tape drive probleme as the data restoration is 100% complete.
I'll try to order and boot on AIX5.3ML5 cd

thank you all

The reason your server shows 5300-01 is because some fixes are missing to make it a full 5300-05

see what this gives:

oslevel -rl 5300-05

You're probably just missing some device driver updates. The important thing is to have the same kernel level (bos.mp and bos.mp54 filesets) on the boot device and the mksysb image.
