Problem starting the CDE as non-root user 1

We have recently acquired some RS/6000s pre-installed by the supplier with AIX 4.3.3. After creating a new user the user is unable to start the CDE after login to the graphical login screen with an error stating: The DT messaging system could not be started. The root user is however able to start the CDE session. I presume it is something to do with permissions.

try copying another users .dtprofile that works to the new users profile . cp /home/olduser/.dtprofile /home/newuser/.dtprofile .logon again and see what happens. goodluck

Unfortunately that didn't work. Only the root user seems to be able to start the DT messaging service so I must assume that some file or directory permissions were not set correctly during installation. Or else the user needs to belong to a group which can start the system.

recently we also upgraded to version 4.3.3 and we having similar problems,have you found any solutions yet if so please let me know,in the mean time i will continue my quest to solve the problem if i do solve it ill let you know.<br><br>regards

What we eventually dicovered was that the system had flagged all the users home directories as having owner and group root which meant that log and initialisation couldn't be written to the directory and the CDE would not start.<br><br>Strangely smitty was also flagging new users home directories with owner and group root. After I chown-ed the directories this problem also went away .

thanks for the tip,it worked i changed the home directory on the machine to chmod 765 and then logged onto machine with user id&passw and it worked
