I've just installed RH 7.2 on the following computer:
Pentium 100
5GB HD
1MB PCI VGA (S3)
32MB RAM

I'm unable to start the GUI on the system. When I type "startx", I get the following:

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

Is the video card underpowered for the GUI environment (1MB Video RAM)? Is the total system memory (32MB RAM) underpowered?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Did you configure the GUI properly for your hardware.

As root, run Xconfigurator and follow the on screen instructions, entering the details for the vid card and monitor when asked.

then try startx AV

Thanks for the post TheRAt.

In the Xconfigurator program, I get the following PCI Probe window:

PCI probing found a:

PCI Entry : S3 Inc.|Trio 64V2/DX or /GX
X Server : XF86_S3
XFree4 Driver : (default)

The only option is to press OK. After OK, I get the following:

Server doesn't exist, can't continue.
tried to use ../ ../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_s3

Any other suggestions?

Hi,

Make sure you installed the rpm with that XFree86 server, i.e. ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/7.2/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/XFree86-S3-3.3.6-42.i386.rpm .

rpm -q XFree86-S3

should tell you if its installed. If not, download the above rpm (or find on your CD), change directory to same directory and then do as root :

rpm -Uvh XFree86-S3*.rpm

... then try startx ...

Regards
