I have set up small directories of 10 pages or so in Pagemaker but having a lot of trouble with InDesign. I am trying to print 8.5 x 11 pages, double sided, with each side containing two pages 5.5 x 8.5, so that a 5.5 x 11 Book can be stapled in the middle. A 2-up saddlestitched Book in Pagemaker worked fine but I haven't been able to do the same thing in InDesign. The directory looks good in Document form but can't get the Book to print as described or the page numbering to conform to Book style. The page numbers in Book form must be reassigned so that when stacked they are in sequence. Does anybody know what I'm trying to describe? Thanks.

I assume you're talking about Imposing setting the pages so they print in the correct order for folded a book. In a 12 page book the first side of the first piece of paper would be Cover & Back Cover (1 & 12). The reverse side would be Pg 2 and 11. The next sheet would contain pgs 3 & 10 and its reverse would have 4 & 9. Etc.

That's imposing a book. Pagemeker came with the Inbooklet SE plugin that did this for you. Indesign doesn't. Adobe did sell a version of Indesign called Indesign Pagemaker version that was available as an upgrade for Pagemaker. Aodobe also offered the Pagemaker Plugin pack for $50. Both of those included the Pagemeker plugins, including Inbooklet SE.

We got the Pagemaker plugin pack as part of Creative Suite premium. It was a separate cd in the package with its own installation code.

I don't think, not sure though, that Adobe still offers that. If they do offer the plugin pack, it's probably only for the current version of ID. I don't know what you bought. If, by some chance you did get Inbooklet with yours, you'll find it at the bottom of the ID File menu.

If you go to something like versiontracker.com, you can search for "impose" to locate plugins or apps. You can also go to Adobe's site and search for Indesign plugins. However, you could have a problem with your version 2. ID did not really take flight in the market until version 3 (CS), so there's mor availabe for that and the current vrsion 4.

JMGalvin: Thanks very much for the response; now disposed to reverting to my good ole Pagemaker 7.0 for this little job.

Adobe bundled a light version of InBooklet ('SE') with InDesign as the optional Pagemaker plugin pack with version 3. Version 4 had the plugin by default. You can find the full version of InBooklet at
You can find a free imposition script on the InDesign installer CD. It is not loaded by default.

If you are still looking, there is a great little script at the Adobe site that will allow you to do 2-up impositions in ID2. In my last job, I had ID2 and I was always needing to do 2-ups because we did a lot of inhouse booklet printing. This script worked really well - easy to use to. I will see if I can find the link. Fortunately ID CS2 includes an imposition feature, so in my new job, where I use CS2, I don't need the separate script. But I also no longer need to do any 2-up impositions!
