Problem seeing FireWire hard drive on reboot

Using a new (March 2002) P4-1.6 GHz XP Pro PC with a BusLink FireWire external hard drive. The external hard drive is not 'seen' by the PC after a reboot, but the PCI FireWire Controller is. If I disconnect the FireWire cable from the external drive then reconnect it, the drive becomes visible to XP Pro and useable.

Does anyone know how to get this recognition to take place automatically? Anyone had any success with a different manufacturer of PCI card and/or external hard drive?
