Problem renaming layers

I am a newbie to AE so this is probably a dumb question. After dragging an imported file (psd) from the project window to the comp window, the file appears as Layer 1 in the timeline which is the same name as the source file. How do I rename the layer? Hitting enter brings up the layer in the comp window and layer settings ctrl+shift+y is grayed out. The same goes for pre-comp layers and duplicates of layers.

Don't use 'Enter', use 'Return', then you should be able to rename any layer (precomp) in the timeline.

You can also use the "Layer Setting" (Ctr+Shft+Y) under Layer in the menu to adjust the name of a layer at any time.

I should add that if I had bothered to read the whole question I would have seen that you mentioned the "Layer Settings" entry was "greyed out" and now I feel like a retard.
