I am running Win 98 SE and recently had to reinstall Win 98 SE. I then reinstalled Corel Office 7, added the Ser. No., uninstalled Office 7 (using Corel Remove Program in C:\Corel\Office7\AppMan), then installed WordPerfect
Office 2000 SP-4 from the CD. Noticed during the install that I got an indication of MERGE FAILED: MERGE SQL LINKS, during the Updating Installation process. Paradox 9 did not install. What has happened here and how can it be corrected?
Thanks,
David Minkin

A lot of people have had that problem with 2000. I don't have the URL, but go to and look for the instructions on uninstalling WP2K by hand. This involves deleting registry entries. (back up the entire registry first..see instructions in W. Help). It's more tedious than daunting.

Having a faulty BDE engine may also be a problem, if you have WPpro (with Paradox), which I suspect you do. If this be the case, check out the Paradox section (where this has at some point been dealt with).

Theoretically you can run two versions of WP Office next to each other. I have found, however, that it works best if the newer version is installed first, and then the older version. It makes no sense, but it seems to work.

Thanks for the info. Still have been too busy to allocate time I need to try your fix out, but my time management is getting better now.

I have found the easiest way is to use the corel uninstall or control panel add/remove programs and remoce corel. next use regedit and blow away all the keys that reference corel and reboot.

after reboot install corel from the command line

x:\setup.exe /nomsi

Ah, it's back. Yes, generally what the Corel site advises is the removal of all references in the registry editor. That's the tedious part. There are a lot of them.

I have finally come to the conclusion that I am better off with only one version of Paradox, which is now 10, but I do have both versions of Word Perfect, and they seem to work all right side by side. Not installing P8 next to P10 has elimintated a number of the problems I have had repeatedl including a conflict between Corel and Eudora.
