Hi

Today a friend of mine has installed 256mb ram (in addition to the 64mb ram it had as standard) and installed Mcafee anti-virus to their pc which has Windows ME. The pc was fine when the machine was turned back on after installing the ram and anti-virus. However they have just restarted the machine again and now it will not load properly - it stays on the same page and the following error appears on the screen:

Spool32 has caused an error in lxacpprt.dll Spool32 will now close. Please restart if you have problems.

The pc has been restarted several times and been left for over an hour without success - nothing happens... it appears to be loading with the usual blank blue screen but stays like this.

I understand there is a resolution to the error message - the following is from Microsoft:

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the spool format is set to PMJOURNAL.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
2. Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
3. On the Details tab, click Spool Settings.
4. In the Spool data format box, click EMF.
5. Click OK, and then click OK.
-----------------------------------

The problems is we CANNOT get the machine loaded up and started in order to get into the printer settings. None of the settings with the printer were changed - we have only installed ram and mcafee anti-virus (can either of these cause this problem??) Please can anyone help with this urgent problem?

Thank you very much for any help.

Anyone? OK I have visited my friend and found that I can start the PC in safe mode but it does not fully load up and stays on the Egg timer ("safe mode" is in each corner of the screen) and nothing happens. I pressed control-alt-delete to see what processes were running and I found there was one called "Msgsrv32 (not responding)". What is this process? Anyway I ended the task and still nothing happened.

When I attempted to start the computer in Normal mode it would get no further than the usual blank blue screen and when I look at which processes are running I see "Mcvsescn" and "Cmdninst". What are these? I tried leaving them running and the Spool32 error eventually appeared. I also tried ending both of the processes and nothing happened...it just stays on the blue screen (no egg timer but just a cursor...and nothing else happens or loads).

Very strange problem. Thank you very much for any help.

Hi lesj1968

I see "Mcvsescn" and "Cmdninst". What are these?

Mcvsescn..McAfee Virus scanner application component. [E-Mail scanner]
Cmdninst..Microsoft Config Manager Device Installer Launcher is part of the Windows ME operating system.

There are several ways to approach your problem. This one from MKB may get you up to a point where you can reset your printer...

PS Googleing mcvsescn + boot problem = 560 hits..!
