Hi Folks,

I am not an expert on AIX and I recently acquired a 43P from an ex-DBA so I can familise myself with AIX and build confidence.

Basically last week I have had probs trying to start the machine and an engineer came on site. He managed to boot it up without having to open the box ! Now I tried to started it up again this morning and I received an error message saying something like

Choose [OK] to return to login screem
Select Failsafe session from login screen option menu and log in
Check to see that the hostname is correct in /etc/hosts

and so on.

So I followed all tasks, and no probs on finding the entry on /etc/hosts. Then I ran smit mktcpip as instructed, and it failed !

error messages like

ifconfig: error calling entry point for /usr/lib/drivers/if_en: specified device does not exist
chgif: cannot get records from CuAt
chgif: ifconfig command failed

prob with command chdev

I do not understand what is going on?

I also ran errpt|grep en

and got error message

P H en0 ADAPTER ERROR???

Anyone shed a light in this please?

Thanking you all in advance

Regards

Katherine

hi

looks like you have a corrupted odm, i could be wrong .the error you getting is saying that the CuAt (customised attributes) library cannot find the ethernet card description to allow you to perfom changes.
i suggest reinstalling your operating system.try to get hold of AIX 433 cd's boot into maintenance mode and do a new installation or installing a new ethernet card.so many possibilities!!!
a good site to go readup on aix stuff is
good luck !!!

Katherine,

Try

lsdev -Cc adapter is ent0 defined or available?

If is available then try

mkdev -l ent0

Can you post up the relevant errpt -a entry for the en0 error?

What is the output of ifconfig -a

HI PSD,

I ran the query lsdev -Cc adapter is ent0 defined or available? and it states ent0 is defined?

What shall I do, am I right in thinking I have to make it available?

Regards

Katherine

Katherine,

Well this could correlate with the en0 error i.e. the card has failed and needs to be replaced.

Try :

mkdev -l ent0

If this fails - try :

rmdev -dl ent0

rmdev -dl en0

cfgmgr

The re-run : lsdev -Cc adapter

If it is not there or has failed then the adapter will not re-appear, then it is time to swap it out. IF you need to do this it most likely the on-board adapter and therefore you will require a new system board i.e. sysplanar. Call out you hardware support people.

Cheers

Hi PSD,

Looks like you are right there, I am going to make a support call on this as definitely do need a replacing of PCI card.

Any idea how or why did it happen?

Many thanks for all your help and inputs.

Regards

Katherine

Katherine,

Well your error log should give you some more detail - but they do fail now and again after all at the end of the day it is only electronics.

It is good practice for you anyway and next time you will know the signs.....

Best of luck
