I have a huge problem when loading up my Windows XP SP2, but it has only happened recently (3-4 days ago), so im assuming it is something I have done wrong.

My windows XP simply does not work when loading up, UNTIL the icons for the network connections appear. The problem is that the icons do not appear on their own (even after 30 mins of waiting!!). I have tried going into control panel and loading up the network connections from there, and the odd thing is, once the folder for the network connection has been loaded up in control panel, everything kicks into life. The annoying thing is, it takes almost 15 mins to load up that folder.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the problem is due to me using a program which increased the amount of internet connections from 10 to 50 (as 10 was the default or maximum for SP2). I used this program, after a reccomendation on a Shareaza forum to increase my download speeds, after that, however, the problem began. Nevertheless, I had previously used that program 3 months ago to increase the network connections and I had no such problem. I can no longer find that program, and I believe the problem is something more, because there is no reasonable explanation for what is happening.

I have scanned my registry, done virus and spyware scans, using different programs and methods, but the problem still occurs. Hibernating my computer and then restarting it from hibernation, which I tried yesterday, has the internet connections still on, so the computer had no problem starting up. But shortly after loading from hibernation, my computer began to make some very disturbing noises, as if there was a blender inside rather than a fan. . .?! Naturally I turned off the computer, (illegally, it wouldnt turn off normally), and restarted the computer. The problem of the network connections were still there.

My computer has recently been extremely slow when shutting down, and generally, with gameplay and multitasking, has been considerably slower. I doubt it is a problem with my registry, or spyware/adware/viruses, as I mentioned before, I had done numerous scans. I also doubt it is my hardware, I have a 3.4GHz Intel Processor, 3.5 GB DDR RAM and over 50GB free hard drive space still on my computer. . . I dont know what to do, and I have no idea whatsoever what the problem is. This problem has only happened RECENTLY and I have been through everything, installed files, history etc but I can think of no possible explanation. Thank you very much!

SP2 introduced a change to the TCP/IP stack to limit the number of simultaneous incomplete outbound connections. I too have experimented with increasing this number and, whilst I didn't see any real improvement in P2P applications, I didn't experience any of the problems you describe. I can't remember where I got the patch from either but if I remember correctly it took a backup of the unmodified driver before applying the changes so you should be able to restore from that. Worst case scenario is you can always reinstall SP2.

Do you have any mapped drives for which the PC may be waiting for a time-out?

Process Explorer and Process Monitor (from Sysinternals) may give you an insight into what is going on.

This is one application that patches tcpip.sys. It may give you the option to reset the changes back to normal.

I also doubt it is my hardware,
never count out problems with the hardware...
But shortly after loading from hibernation, my computer began to make some very disturbing noises, as if there was a blender inside rather than a fan. . .?!
indicates a hardware failure...

my bet is on the HDD...

check the SMART status of your HardDrive, ie. HDD HEALTH - it is freeware...

also check the DMA setting of the IDE controllers (right click on workplace, properties, then DeviceManager, expand the IDE/ATAPI controller, double click on it) it should be set to DMA...
if it is set to PIO (slowest mode) then deinstall the pertinent driver (IDE Controller) and reboot...
reason: XP will revert to PIO mode on any DMA drive, if it encounters more than 6 DMA transfer errors on the channels...

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

also, I would run SFC /scannow from the CLI (or run box and have your XP cd handy), as it will check all your system files , and replaces them if they are damaged/corrupt or missing...

PS: I also have used a program to increase the half-open connection limit that was imposed by MS (due to a worm), and have not had any connection problems nor startup problems to date (3 yrs and counting)... so the problem does not lie there... but rather in another area, which got botched in the mean time...
I had previously used that program 3 months ago to increase the network connections and I had no such problem.
indicates this ...

Somehow I managed to completely miss the bit about unpleasant noises coming from the PC!

I concur with Ben - sounds very much like an imminent hardware failure to me. The first thing I'd be doing is copying any important files off that drive and only then starting on the diagnostics!

Yeah. . . but it was a one off, the weird noises have NEVER happened before that, but. . . =s I really hope it isnt a hardware problem. . .

Is there any logical reason/s for WHY weird noises would be coming from a pc? Could you give me a list of any reasons please? =s I'd rather not assume the worst at the min, im just trying to find a "quick fix". In reply to "big Ben", my hard drives were set to IDE, and I didnt install that program because, well. . . I cant use it without restarting my computer. . . =s . . .

And "ed2020", do you know what that program is called that defaults the tcpip.sys file?

Hey, i just got the hdd cleany thing working without having to restart my pc. . . even though the prediction for my hdd health is 25%, it says there are no known problems with it. . .

this is some of the debug info i got from the hard drive cleaner, hope it helps somehow. .. ?

Don't just look at the harddrive.
unplug every thing except bare minimum that is needed then see if it will boot faster

this means PCI cards and all drives except the harddrive
(you might get a no floppy drive error) you have to unplug both the ribbon and power

sometimes failure in one component does not fail the component but sure slows the system down

something else to do is to unplug all the power supply plugs to the motherboard and replug them back in. if there is a bad connection that is feeding low voltage you will see issues...especially in startup.

I have see DVD/CD and hard drives that work fine but slow a system way. this holds true with spare harddrives from old computers.

you might want to check the voltage from the motherboard with a meter. a good place to check is one of the fan plugs on the motherboard

this is a good start

Thanks, I'd do that. I was wondering, do any of you know any problems directly related to LAN etc connections? Because it isnt the general startup that is the problem, its just that small aspect of the start up. . . Have any of you heard of any problems relating to internet connections on startup, if so, is there any way to fix or are there any programs that can help with boosting the speed of connections on startup? is there any way I can change the order of the connections on startup, or the priority or anything. . .? Because its simply once the network connections have begun, everything is much better. . .

If you have your network card set for DHCP but you are pluged in to a network with out a DHCP Sever or the DHCP sever is turned off, It will get you a real slow boot up because the network card will be waiting for a HDCP IP and will have to time out be for booting.

Hi, allteltec, if you'd bear with me, could you possibly tell me how to change my network card from DHCP please? Thanks very much =)

Ah!
I actually see what you are asking now.
you say it is slow till the network Icon goes on the tool bar.
when stuff load up sometimes the network icon is last to load. Meaning that your system is working hard to load multiple items.

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO FIRST.
download Highjackthis and run it.
save the log file and paste it to this thread

Startup Control Panel is a great program for disabling startup items

after you have posted and let everyone pick at the log. Listen to them concerning what is causing your slowdown. They sometimes live for this stuff...lol

you can load this. It is kinda what you were asking under my previous post
this skews the results and runs the startup items within itself so it makes it hard to diagnostics your issues this is why I say to run it after you have your system running better

your system specs would be good to have too?

Hi. . . firewolfrl. . . When I ran the scan, I found some very. . . odd websites on the 01 Hosts: 127.0.0.2 kinda thing. . . and. . . lets just say I need a small chat with my brother. . .

Another question, do you know any firewall system stuff that actually BLOCKS. . . adult sites. . .? I was under the impression my Zone Alarm was doing the trick. . . after finding google images etc. . . Maybe he got better at hiding it. . . =s Anything that even blocks google images. . .?   And you know how easy the stuff is. . . accessed these days. . .

But how do I get rid of these Hosts. . . I really think they may be slowing it down. . . Nevertheless, here is the log without those. . . hosts. . . hope it helps somehow. . .

But on a brighter note, my computer specs that you asked for.

260 GB HDD (Partitioned when I bought the computer)

3.4 GHz Intel Processor

Are there any other specifications you need?

And a big thank you to everyone for so much support I have recieved so far :)

this is the program I use for my 13 year old son. My son and his friends have already found out that they can't go to those sites ...the filter system is great.
and you can log on and go where you want too with the password. when my son's friend was over the other day we could hear the program "Bark" about every 2 minutes.(means a bad site was blocked). My wife and I were in tears laughing so hard. and yes the boys got in trouble...the program also keeps an activity log.

I don't have time right now to look close to your log due to a road trip....but the others will pick at it and help you today....

your brother is gonna be pissed when the computer starts barking at him.

have fun....lol

Oh my god! Firewolfrl, thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You really have made my day :)

Do you also know how do I get rid of the "hosts?" Because it seems that my computer has like 15 IP host addressy thinggys. . . does that mean that they are hacking into my computer or have clean access or something?

And thank you SO MUCH for that program!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really!!!!!! EVERY OTHER PROGRAM I HAVE TRIED IS RUBBISH!! To say the least!!!!!!!! =D AND ITS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!

-laughs with pure joy-

Thank you again! :)
