I have two files in Excel 97. One is a data file, the second is an "executive summary" of the first. The summary file contains a large number of DSUM formulas. For each of these formulas, the data range is located in the data file, the column reference is simply a number, and the criteria range is located on another sheet in the summary file.

If the summary file is opened, and I select "update links", an error of #VALUE! is returned for these formulas. Other linked formulas update as they normally would.

As soon as I open the data file, all the formulas in the summary file function properly.

Am I missing something simple here? Anyone else have problems linking the database formulas?

AFAIK, database formulae don't work on closed workbooks - you may need to use an old Excel4MAcro to retrieve this data

Other than that, don't update links unless the data workbook is open.......or use a pivot table......or you could try swapping your DSUMs for Array formulae which DO work on closed workbooks HTH
