Hi all,

I have been trying to join an XP client to our NT4 Domain and receiving the following error 'a domain controller for the domain "domainname" could not be contacted....'

I know this is some sort of DNS issue but its only related to ONE pc. Rejoined other XP machines and they work fine.

The following have not worked:

I joined to a workgroup and then tried joining to the domain.

Removed the computer name from server manager.

I can ping (via ip) to all addresses- server, gateway, router etc just not by host name.

The settings for the XP computer are exactly the same as all the others which can join the domain.

Any help/advice would much appreciated.

Sunil

I realize you can ping certain addresses on the domain but your hardware could be working intermittently.

Did you change the network cable or the NIC? It may be a wiring issue with the data jack so it's a good idea to check the integrity of that as well.

Hope this helps.

Hi Frankieee123,

Sorry haven;t been able to post updates up until now.

Problem was solved...

The 'node type' was peer-to-peer so I forced the change in the registry to make it hybrid- worked straight away. Not sure why it wouldn;t change automatically.

Thanks for the reply,

Sunil
