Hi, I am having installing a generic usb 2.0 pci card. I have windows xp pro. When I install it, it insists that it can find the best drivers, even when I point it in the direction of the supplied drivers on the cd. The installation programme on the cd does not seem to work. When I plug things into it, they work but I get the bubble message "this device could work faster". Any tips gratefully received.
Matt.

Which ServicePack are you running? Does your machine support USB 2.0?

How may I query XP for the USB version my PC supports?

USB2 recognised as USB1 in Windows XP

It is possible you were fooled.

The card is what is usually referred to as an USB 1.1 card, but can be referred to as a USB 2.0 card because this distinction has no meaning anymore by standard. What you want is a board certified that its ports are "High Speed".

As Wikopedia explains:
[ul]
USB supports three data rates.

[li]A Low Speed rate of 1.5 Mbit/s (183 KiB/s) that is mostly used for Human Interface Devices (HID) such as keyboards, mice, and joysticks. [/li]

[li]A Full Speed rate of 12 Mbit/s (1.5 MiB/s). Full Speed was the fastest rate before the USB 2.0 specification and many devices fall back to Full Speed. Full Speed devices divide the USB bandwidth between them in a first-come first-served basis and it is not uncommon to run out of bandwidth with several isochronous devices. All USB Hubs support Full Speed. [/li]

[li]A Hi-Speed rate of 480 Mbit/s (57 MiB/s). [/li]

Though Hi-Speed devices are commonly referred to as "USB 2.0", not all USB 2.0 devices are Hi-Speed. A USB device should specify the speed it will use by correct labeling on the box it came in or sometimes on the device itself. The USB-IF certifies devices and provides licenses to use special marketing logos for either "Basic-Speed" (low and full) or High-Speed after passing a compliancy test and paying a licensing fee. All devices are tested according to the latest spec, (2.0), so recently-compliant Low Speed devices are also 2.0.[/ul]

Take it back. There is no driver on earth that can make a 1.1 (Low-Speed or Full-Speed) board a true High-Speed mode USB controller.

The box says supports 1.5/12/480Mbps. The shop is a good one. The pc sees it as a via usb enhanced host controller. I have service pack 2 and current hotfixes. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help. Matt.

Thanks for that. Following the links, I need to disable the onboard USB 1.1 controller in the PCs BIOS. Could you tell me how to do that?
Thanks in advance, Matt.

Before you start, disconnect all USB Devices and disable the onboard USB 1.1 controller in the PCs BIOS".

You may have to refer to "your manual". Are you asking how to enter the Bios? Or how to disable any USB 1.1 controller when you get into the Bios? The latter should be a matter of exploring the Bios and looking for that option, setting and saving any changes before you exit your Bios.

Thanks for your help. I think I did all that to no avail. I now have a rather chaotic scene in my device manager. If you are fed up then let me know and I can give up. I could insert a screen shot of it if I knew how. Is there a way to insert a picture into a post?
Thanks again, Matt.

Be careful as there is a VIA driver for motherboard based USB controllers; and a VIA driver for PCI-board based PCI controllers.

The VIA PCI/USB 2.0 card drivers can be found here:

Please Note: Users report that the D-Link drivers work fine with other VIA USB 2.0 cards.

Thanks for all your help. I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I'm going to take it back!
Thanks anyway, Matt.

When you want to post a screenshot you can use something like this and link to it.

Some of the cleverer among us (not me) use something along these lines to embed it into the Tek-Tips page.

Thanks again for all help. I have ordered a Belkin one which is on the list! Hopefully you won't hear from me in a couple of days...
Thanks again, Matt.
