When I follow the steps for installing, I get this output after running the ./configure command fromt he source directory.....

wumagic[/datafs/misc/samba-2.2.4/source]./configure
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
wumagic[/datafs/misc/samba-2.2.4/source]

what do I have to do to correct this so I can then run the next step in the install process?

Thanks!

AIX C compiler (xlc) is payware from IBM, but gcc can be downloaded from aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu or bullfreeware.com

There are two other solutions. Get the executable directly from bullfreeware.com (only problem is that it is version 2.0.7). Or you can get an RPM release from IBM (you will need to install RPM first and then you can install the samba.rpm filesets. The RPM is version 2.2.3a)

I tried the source code from the official site and had the same problem as you. I didn't want to install gcc just to get samba working, so these seemed like better options. Hope this helps. Einstein47

gcc install is pain in either case

you can get ready-built samba or gcc binaries to check out from aixpdslib (samba 2.2.4) , as none of package systems handles removal or upgrade well

Where can I download these files from? Yes i see that GCC is a pain to install..... So I want to try a different route!

I downloaded the exe off of bullfreeware.com after it runs, it comes back that there is not enough free space in my /usr file system.. when i do smitty fs and try to allocate more space to the File System it wont allow me to add more to the /usr jfs...... :-(

then you have problems with free space, not samba - check out AIX forum for cleanup hints,
it is easier to unpack bull's exe packages with unzip into separate directory under /tmp
