Problem installing RH9

Hi everyone,

I tried to install RH9 on my PC with dual boot (W2K/RH9), my PC is a Pentium IV 800 MHz, 256 MB RAM, SIS305 video AGP, 37 GB HDD, net card.

I installed W2K in a 4 GB partition... no problem. The rest for RH9.

The problem is when I was installing RH9 (I saw it with the text install) in the middle of the install of the 1st CD the install get a kind of "rpmdb error: try recover blah blah...". Looking for that error (rpmdb error) it's looks like an error on the rpm DB that you can get when rpm get wrong, but on installed systems. This case, rpm is in the CD!!! I tried with 2 different medias and I get the same error.

Does anyone have the same problem? any ideas? Did I do something wrong?

You might want to use the verify media option on RH 9. The only time that I have had this issue is when I had a bad CD. If your download was corrupted for any reason, then all media created from that download would exhibit the same error.

Thanks for your response, but I did it and it had no problem, in fact, both medias are made from different download... I mean, 2 differents friends provide me with their own CDs (U know what I mean?)

With the same CDs, we (in my office) had installed severals PC with no problem...

I don't have a clue about what's going on... may be Linux does not want me!!

How are you installing? Desktop, Developer, Server, Custom? It may be a specific package that you are requesting that is causing the problem.

Do you have any idea what package it is bombing out on?

I tried all, starting with custom, then server, desktop...

The problem started with the glibc-devel-2.3.2-11.9.i386.rpm (!!!), so I tried to skip it... and the problem start with another package (I don't remember which one).

Is it the same package(s) every time? Or is it just sort of a random occurrance?

I can't recall ever having that experience myself.

I think it starts with the same package... I didn't try againg skipping the glibc-devel package. Bu I think that the trouble will begin with the same package...

My nightmare is that I use the same CDs (after my PC) to install 3 more PC.. and I had no problem!!!

I understand how you feel. I've had problems (not this one) that were related to improperly handled hardware. You remove the hardware during install, the install happens beautifully, and then the hardware is supported during run-time, it just hangs during the installation scripts.

I can't claim to understand why.

Have you tried any other distributions? Or moved your hard disk to another system to see if it will install on the drive OK, and then move the drive back? This has solved numerous hardware problems I've had.

I didn't try another distro.

I think you are right, may be I have a hardware problem... I will try to disable some components, change disk connections, and others. Of course it will take time, but after all testing I will let you know what happened.

This may not be relevant but there are some issues with glibc and Redhat 9. The problem has something todo with the distro having different binaries for various processors eg. i386 and i686. Perhaps you need to force the installer to use the i386 version. There's more info on Redhats support pages which you'll need if you are trying to patch your system with rpm after installation anyway.

Try running knoppix and see what happens and if it runs okay.
