I have been asked to install "mtr" (matt's trace route) on Solaris 8 by our network team. I downloaded three binaries from sun freeware:

glib-1.2.10-sol8-sparc-local
gtk+-1.2.10-sol8-sparc-local
mtr-0.42-sol8-sparc-local

I used pkgadd -d to install each in the order listed from /tmp.

When I try to run mtr I get:

#mtr
ld.so.1: mtr: fatal libgtk-1.2.so.0: open failed: No such file or directory
Killed
#

I am not familiar with any of the 3 installations. What would be my next step?

you have download the *.gz packages.Once you download verify whether these files have gz extension or not.If these have not ,then move that file to with an extension,
eg
autoconf-2.53-sol9-sparc-local
move to
mv autoconf-2.53-sol9-sparc-local autoconf-2.53-sol9-sparc-local.gz

once you do this ,
1.gunzip -d autoconf-2.53-sol9-sparc-local.gz
2. pkgadd -d autoconf-2.53-sol9-sparc-local

It will install the packages.Let me know if you get any doubts

I gunziped the 3 apps and installed using pkgadd -d without problems. The error message can from running the mtr app.

#mtr
ld.so.1: mtr: fatal libgtk-1.2.so.0: open failed: No such file or directory
Killed
#
