App: Powerpoint 2000

Powerpoint won't let me insert an mpeg. It says: "Powerpoint couldn't insert a movie from the slected file. Either the file is non-standard, or QuickTime is not installed properly".

QuickTime had previously been installed on the NT PC but not the W2K PC.

TechNet recognises a QuickTime error stating that it "makes modifications to the [mci extensions] section in the Win.ini file". Apparently it modifies "mciqtz.drv" which calls on the Mpeg video driver. The correct entries are listed. Needless to say I tried these and had no joy. Article (Q212409).

Any other ideas much appreciated (bearing in mind that a format is not an option).

Thanks! Ó¿Õ¬

Just as an aside, the article link below states the error message you have exactly:

Heres a bunch of stuff you can try:

1. In Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, Media Player is named Mplay32. Click Run on the Start menu.

2. Type %windir%\system32\mplay32.exe and then click OK.

3. On the File menu, click Open.

4. Navigate to your movie file, click to select it, and then click Open.

5. Play the movie in Media Player.

6. If Media Player plays your movie, but you cannot insert it in PowerPoint, there may be something wrong with your installation of PowerPoint. In PowerPoint, click Detect and Repair on the Help menu, and then choose to Reinstall PowerPoint.

7. If Media Player plays your movie, but you cannot insert it in PowerPoint, you can use the following alternative method to insert your movie in PowerPoint as a Media Clip object:

8. In PowerPoint, click Insert on the Object menu.

9. In the Object type list, click Media Clip, and then click OK.

10. Click Insert Clip, and then click Active Movie.

11. Navigate to your movie file, click to select it, and then click Open.

12. On the Edit menu, click Options.

13. Click to clear the Control Bar on Playback, and Border around Object check boxes.

================================================

1. In PowerPoint, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Control Toolbox.

2. In the Control Toolbox, click the More Controls button.

3. In the list of controls, click Windows Media Player.

4. Click anywhere in your slide, and draw a box with your mouse pointer to create a Windows Media Player control.

5. In the Control Toolbox, click the Properties button.

6. In the FileName box of the Properties window, type the path and name of the file that you want to play, and then press ENTER. For example, the following path and name plays a movie called Mymovie.mpg from the desktop.

C:\windows\desktop\mymovie.mpg
