Hi All,

I am not able to see the message log in /var/adm/messages as it is not being updated.I have checked that syslogd daemon is running and /etc/syslog.conf is also fine and I have used logger command to see if logging is working(and it is working). However the system messages are not logged in the /var/adm/messages file.

Any ideas????

Hi,

The normal boot-up messages as well as daily filesystem, login messages.....

be sure to have

on /etc/services
and be care about firewalling function...if the loopback is droped !

Hi,

The said entry is already there in the file /etc/services.
Any more ideas????

I'm looking for someone familiar with the logger command and your problem looks appropriate to this issue.
i want to test the logger command by executing some text to the messages log through the logger command.
for example to pass the output of this "ps -ef|grep oracle" to the messages log using the logger command?
any idea?

I'd say the best way would be to redirect that output to a file, then pass it to logger, e.g.:

[tt]ps -ef | grep [o]racle > /tmp/oracleprocs.$$
logger -p daemon.notice -f /tmp/oracleprocs.$$
rm -f /tmp/oracleprocs.$$[/tt]

I chose the priority "daemon.notice" because it is defined in /etc/syslog.conf to send the output to /var/adm/messages.

Hi, Was this issue with /var/adm/messages ever resolved? I am seeing the exact thing that NavinB had experienced. Please advise.

Are you aware that the /var/adm/messages file is rotate weekely and renamed to messages.0, messages.1, etc.? Eventually the messages that were displayed at boot time will disappear because the system only keeps a certain number of weeks worth.
