Hi everyone !

I am facing one problem: I installed RH Linux 9 on a P-III machine. I added one SM56 PCI modem card (internal modem). When the system was switched on next time, it detected the modem and "configured" it.

After that, if I go to internet configuration wizard, it says: No Modem found on the system.

I tried seeing in the /dev directory. There is no file with the name modem.

Can some one help in solving this problem ?

Thanks In Advance

G'day,
a few things to try.

Do a "ls -ltr" in /dev and look at the last entries.

Hopefully there will be an entry made by the system when it detected and configured the modem. It may not be called /dev/modem though.

Perhaps look in /var/log/messages for any other clues.

I would also search on google for sm56 and linux as I believe there are sites with additional software written for internal modems.

PS I think it is or similar.

Regards, Dave.

Yes, make sure it is an actual hardware modem. If the modem was under $50, it's a safe bet that it is some junkie winmodem or worse.
