I have been having a problem with my sql server (sql 2005).
For some reason my mobile devices cannot find the server on our domain. I reboot the SQL server and then all is fine for approximately a week and it happens again. The PCs on the domain can find the sql server ok during all of this.
This is a common accurrance and has been going on for a few months now. I/we are at a total loss of what to look at.

I have narrowed it down to the SQL Server simply because when rebooted the problem goes away for a period of time.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Did you look behind the microwave? That's where I keep mine. [smile]

Seriously, though... I would suspect a DNS issue. Usually, when you connect to SQL Server, you connect to the ComputerName\InstanceName. If the computer cannot be found on the network, you will be unable to connect to SQL Server.

The next time this happens, try pinging the sql server. First, try to ping the computer name. If that doesn't work, then try pinging the IP Address.

If you can ping the IP Address, but not the computer name, then you have a DNS problem. Make sense?

Thanks, I just found the problem and you had hit the nail on the head.

About a year ago we had changed out a dns server and it was still pointing to it as a primary.
I pointed it to the correct one and it seems to have fixed it without rebooting.

have a star!
