I created a report using CR10 and when I export it to excel the column headings do not remain where they are on the report. Some do and some go way off to the right not over any data column.
Any thoughts on what I did wrong or how to correct the situation.
Thanks in advance.

Attach the column headings to the same vertical guidelines that you are attaching the detail records. In fact all fields should be attached to both vertical and horizontal guidelines, although for headings the vertical guidelines are most critical. For the best output, attach neighboring fields to the same vertical guideline (no space between). This eliminates extra columns in the export. Test by moving the guidelines to make sure all fields are attached.

How do you attach the column headings or detail records to the guidelines?

Drag the field borders until they snap to the guideline. When they have, the corners will turn red (in design mode).

Doesn't seem to be working for me. I guess I will just start the report over from scratch and see what happens. I guess moving columns around and changing the headings must cause a problem.
Thanks for trying.

Check in your file->options to see if you have "snap to grid" set (it should be). Can you see the guidelines? You can add them by clicking on the ruler in design mode. Then experiment by moving the field borders until they click to the guideline.

I have done all of that and I still get the headings for my first three columns off to the right when I download into excel. I tried writing the report again from scratch and the same problem persits. I am at a loss.

are you choosing the MSExcel...(DataOnly)?
If not you are getting something from the Report header or group headers causing the misalignment

Yes I am using the data only option to download the report. I am at a loss. I had to add some new columns and move others around and now it is more messed up than ever. I have gone through and attached all the fields and their appropriate headings to guidelines but still the same mess. Not sure what else to try.

are you trying to dump to excel as a simple table...page header as column names and data in rows below? nothing else?

If so, try suppressing all sections except the Page Header and Details. Export data only...options "Typical"

If that doesn't work use options Custom, constant column width 50,export page headers, simplify page headers

You might want to experiment with a new simple report from a scratch blank report. Pick an easy table, put 3 or 4 fields in Details and try to export. That has to work. May help you see what is wrong in the other report?

Good Luck

That helped some.
Using the costant column width, which I wasn't using before has the headings all lining up with data columns. None now out to the right.
Some of the headings match the data columns but a most are on the wrong columns.
Thanks for your help.

You really have to check to make sure each heading is attached to the correct guideline by moving the guidelines to see if everything is moving with it.

I don't use data only exports, and in the regular excel export, you have an option to select the report section to use for column width. You should choose the section the detail or group section that contains the bulk of your data.

Exports are also improved if you select all section objects->format objects->make same size->same height.

do they start at the left matching and then misalign somewhere to the right?
That point where it goes wrong is where you should look at your Crystal for a problem.
I agree with lbass, size the fields and header the same

Make sure they are Aligned horizontally too.
select ALL section objects-> right click on the left most detail field>Align>tops

It appears to read from top down, across from left to right so if you have a field that is lower than the others, it will be skipped and end up on the far right

That solved the problem. I had to make all the fields and the headings the same size.
I guess you have to pick what you want the report for. If it is for a download, in this case. The fields and headings need to be the same size. This however makes it impossible to read in crystal or as a pdf. If you want it as a pdf or be able to read it in crystal then you can't effectively download it into excel.
Thanks for all the help. It is greatly appreciated.

Actually, I make "excel dump" crystal reports specifically to get data for people who refuse to use formatted reports in crystal. They don't have to be readable in crystal, just details in one horizontal line and a page header.
