Problem editing .aspx pages in sharepoint designer or frontpage

We are having problems editing .aspx pages in SharePoint Designer or FrontPage. The pages won't open in the tool. This site has been up and running for a few years and this is a recent problem. So we are assuming that it is a setting issue or some new patch.

It is a SharePoint 2003 server.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?
