problem downloading files after first time

I'm having a strange problem in IE 5: When I use a media link on a web page, it downloads the file quickly on my T1 connection and plays fine in Media Player or Real player. But when I try any other media link on the same page, the download never starts and I get "detecting proxy settings..." in the status bar. I've tries this on scores of pages, always with the same results. Any suggestions?
