I Would like to erase /dev/rmt/0. I try this command mt -f /dev/rmt/0 erase but, did not work .
I even tried cat /dev/null > /dev/rmt/0, but no hope. Any Idea, the best way to erase

thanks .

Why do you want to erase it?

mt -f /dev/rmt/0 erase will erase the data on the tape in that device.

Seeing how I don't know the circumstances....
I would suggest this:
cd /dev/rmt
rm 0*

Keep in mind that if you still have a tape device attached to the system and do a boot -r, those files will be recreated.

Hope this helps.

Erase should work, but bear in mind the following from the mt man page:

"erase Erase the entire tape. Erasing a tape
may take a long time depending on the
device and/or tape. Refer to the device
specific manual for time details."

Are you sure you're waiting long enough for the command to finish? Alternatively, get yourself a degausser! HTH.

Beware of using degaussers. Some tapes (9840's for example) have positional encoding on the tape and degaussing it will destroy it. For most tapes it's completely safe, but check out the tape first.

'cat /dev/null > /dev/rmt/0' doesn't really work.

'mt -f /dev/rmt/0 erase' Works just fine.

'rm /dev/rmt/0*' Will erase the device link. I don't think that's what you want.

If you use Networker, there is a long erase command under /etc/LGTOuscsi.

I do not want to erase the device link. What I want is just to empty for the tape for future use. I did not aware of that, it will take such along time. From now on I will be able to know it.

Thank you very much, for your help
