I can't copy to a CD-RW or DVD-RW using Windows XP Pro. Windows pops up Problem Copying retry or cancel. I can copy to a regular CD.

I am on an HP Compaq nx6325 Laptop with a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N drive.

Any suggestions?

Have a look in the Event Viewer . This will show you details of system errors you are having. Event Viewer is found in Computer Management via right clicking on My Computer. Any errors you find right click on them for further information.

It doesn't even show up in windows with a record tab. I wonder if this has anything to do with Nero 7 Ultra. I did a reinstall of that and burned the data using that. Its not what I wanted to do, but it works for now.

Try the automatic Fixit solution here too. It will check to see if there is any problems with either or both Upper and Lower Filters in the Registry. It is in fact a common fix for CD/DVD related matters.

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Lemon13 - I have two caveats with your answer there, one the answer is false, the LG GSA-T10N optical drive supports both media types (+-) and I am not aware of any CD/DVD Burner, manufactured in the past 5 years that did not support both.

and two the link is in German (though I have no problem with that, others may not be able to read German)...

linney, I tried the MS Fixit Solution and it told me the drive cannot burn. Since the reinstall of Nero works I guess I'll have to use that. Thanks everyone for your time.

That result from the Fixit program seems a bit weird as Nero seems to be able to burn CD/DVD?

Check this Registry location out to see what it says about your CD drives,

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

– All CD drives show up in same key

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

I only have the one drive:

CurrentCDWriteSpeed - ffffffff
DriveType - 1
MaxCDWriteSpeed - 18

I forgot to paste the last part of the instructions.

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

If you change the value to 02 does Windows give you a Recording Tab?

No, linney it still doesn't give me a recording tab.

I take it you rebooted in order for any Registry change to take effect?

Does Nero still come bundled with an application called InCD, I remember from some time ago that program has in the past caused problems with XP's burning software?

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Of course you could just stick with Nero and forget about XP's CD burning software. XP cannot write to DVD without the use of third party software such as Nero etc, it can only read DVD's.

Yeah, I rebooted...lol. I did have InCD installed, but I don't remember where that come from. I uninstalled that awhile ago, because it take over whenever a disk was put in and it annoyed me.

Well that would be the problem then. I'm fine with Nero. Thanks for all your help.

You're welcome. It is time to start saving for Windows 7, you have my permission to skip Vista. Incidentally both have built-in DVD burning software.
