I need to convert some Pagemaker P65 files to InDesign format. Each page in the P65 files contain a "Body" style using typographer (curly) quotes and a "Code" style using straight quotes. The trouble when I convert the files is that InDesign converts the Code style's straight quotes to curly quotes although it maintains the typographers quotes correctly in the Body style.

I need to preserve the typographer quotes in the Body style but I also need to preserve the straight quotes in the Code style.

There are too many files to convert each quote manually so I need to have InDesign maintain the original quote type. The Code style preserves all other settings for color, indent, etc. so it's just a matter of how to preserve the straight quotes. All suggestions are very welcome...

Problem Solved...

Indesign must read the preference settings from the Pagemaker file to decide how to perform the conversion.

Note that the P65 files were each created with the Use Typographers Quotes option selected to ensure curly quotes appear throughout the Body style. The straight quotes in the Code style were pasted along with the actual code from a plain text editor and so retain the straight quotes of its fixed font.

InDesign recognizes that the P65 files have the Use Typographers Quotes option selected so converts all quotes to curly quotes regardless - hence my problem.

The solution I found is to open each P65 file in Pagemaker, then uncheck the option to Use Typographers Quotes then save the file. Now InDesign converts the P65 file correctly preserving each style of quote. :)
