We currently have Backup exec on several different servers. One of this servers runs our Microsoft Exchange mail system. On this server Backup exec is currently having problems producing a catalog after the backup has performed sucessfully. If we try read a tape produced on this server it cannot read the catalogue. The problem is the same if we try reading the same tape on another server. The server causing the problem can read tapes produced by other servers. Any one any ideas?

Check for soft and/or hard errors on the media itself. you can get this info at the Media tab or by drilling down in the Reports tab until you get the Media Set report. Inside you will find columns for "soft errors", meaning that they are recoverable, and "hard errors", meaning UNrecoverable.

If you're talking about more than one tape with this problem, I would still check them all for soft/hard errors and deal with the tapes that are showing problems first, then check into other causes for the rest. At least then you won't waste time trying to inventory and catalog tapes that have no hope of being read.

You haven't mentioned anything about the jobs aborting or failing, so I'm taking it for granted that there is nothing in the event log of BE or the OS that would be "flagged" as a cause.

I hope some of this helps. If I think of anything else I'll post again.
